As a child I was inspired by Old Master value studies and unfinished grisaille underpaintings from my parents’ art history books - a fascination that still influences my work today

Anika Tunstall is a British artist with a focus on conceptual portraiture. Juxtaposing traditional oil painting techniques and figurative realism with modern materials, props and ideas, she often creates large-scale contemporary portraits. Her work explores themes around human psychology, including fear, shame, love, self identity and the subconscious mind. Some of her recent works utilise photography and digital photo manipulation, combining elements of symbolism and surrealism to convey concepts that question some of the ideologies of modern society.

Born in Bristol, England, Anika gained her Foundation degree in Applied Art and Design from Bath Spa University in 2009. Since then she has continued to develop her art practice from her studio in North Somerset. She has exhibited a number of paintings at the Mall Galleries in London and has had works included in group exhibitions including the SWA’s Annual Exhibition and most notably The Threadneedle Prize for contemporary figurative art. Anika's work has previously been pre-selected for the prestigious ‘BP Portrait Award’ at the National Portrait Gallery, London. She has also collaborated on commercial projects, with a recent commission to create cover artwork for an artist, released on Armada Music.
